Australia’s home décor industry is booming and is expected to hit 407.4 million by 2023. After all the gloom in 2020 and its flow over into 2021, one sure way to bring some excitement into your home while keeping safe is trying out some decor ideas and incorporating some beauty into your environment. Are you wondering which styles and interior designs to try your hands on? Here are some diverse home décor trends most likely to trend in 2021.

Vintage

Vintage décor combines repurposed, retro, and salvaged designs to add a unique touch to your home. One major characteristic of this type of decor is that you can create a lot of contrast while using bold colours and a minimalist approach. The objective is to end up with a cohesive aesthetic design that infuses personality into the home.

Developing that vintage look requires significant layering. Knowing how to form that layering is the secret to creating an appealing vintage décor. This means adding luxe elements to something like a modern piece of furniture to create a “less-is-more style.” Another example is to complement statement lighting with antique centerpieces to create that sought-after vintage effect. Keep in mind that going vintage doesn’t necessarily mean old-school.

Rustic rogue décor

Described as a head-turner, this decor style is a more detailed approach to the cottage core effect (which will be discussed next). Do you enjoy modern home comforts but still want to add some character details to your design? Then the rustic rogue style is perfect for you. This decor type works well for homes with features that really stand out. For example, a living space with original floorboards and exposed beams are characteristics you’ll not miss. Secondly, homes with panelled walls help make this décor come to life with just some minimal details.

The rustic vogue consists of a balance of contrasts; without an eye for style, it may be difficult to combine these contrasting elements to create harmony. However, if you want to save some money by doing it yourself, there are some details to look out for. First of all, look for unique pieces in the home that have grain and texture, for example, elements in the home that aren’t polished off with a complete look. It could be anything ranging from exposed wood, stonework, or unpolished metal that form a part of the home’s structure. Admittedly, it may not be easy to get your design right, but a free interior design tool would be worth it in such instances.

Cottagecore

As mentioned above, the cottagecore is a more minimal form of the rustic rogue and has hints of glamour to create a minimally luxurious traditional style. The cottagecore design began as a simplistic theme, but people opted to add details to display their individual preferences over time. This decor style creates a sense of nostalgia and has some traditional English-inspired themes. Imagine living in a countryside cottage, surrounded by greenery, domesticated animals, and floral prints.

To create this look in parts of your home, you’ll need to consider peach-printed décor, flowers, striped and checked designs, wooden hand-crafted items and furniture as well as other elements with the same characteristics. This helps create a welcoming ambiance in your home.

Japandi

Japandi, as the name implies, combines Japanese with a touch of Scandinavian. This home décor style is more about smooth lines and uncompromised colour palettes. According to Pinterest, the Japandi style has seen an increase in usage since October 2019 to date. People tend to love it because it gives a neat and clean look to the home’s interior.

Additionally, the neutral palette tones the Japandi works with make it easy on the eyes without creating a noisy theme. As more people are spending most of their time at home, the general belief is that the Japandi helps create a soothing sanctuary away from the outside world. Even though Japan and Scandinavia are several oceans apart, these two cultures create a welcoming appeal for simplistic and sustainable décors.

Distant shores décor

Admittedly, not everyone can afford that beach home, but what if you can recreate the look in your living space? That’s the idea behind the distant shores décor. To bring the outside indoors in this styled theme, you’ll have to work with subtle monotones and tropical colours. Don’t forget to throw in soft lemon colours as well for an extra touch. These hues mimic the distant shore and offer an easily relaxing space while indoors. You have the liberty to complement your chosen colours and themes with a contemporary edge for a more visually appealing effect.

Furthermore, to pull off this look, search for wall decals with sea or ocean themes. There are several designs to choose from on eBay, Pinterest, and other online portals. Meanwhile, the most significant areas to concentrate on when creating this style are the windows and draperies, furniture, and lighting.

Industrial styling

This décor is largely a “no-nonsense” interior design theme birthed from a warehouse’s characteristic look. Others take inspiration from a factory look or an industrial appearance. The industrial décor often uses exposed brick, high ceilings, stonework, wood, metal, and any other recycled material. Moreover, the furnishings are mostly yard reclaims. So, if you’re a fanatic of this style, getting materials to make this look a reality is fairly easy.

For many people, the best thing about this décor is the freedom it offers to customise the space to suit individual preferences. You may also realise that industrial décor makes use of modern and traditional designs. The mix of these contrasting styles creates layering while striving to achieve harmony from these very different elements.

Natural fabrics

Due to the growing campaign to go green and maintain a cleaner environment, many people are shying away from synthetic materials. For example, nylon, polyester, rayon, etc., are losing the turf to natural and recycled textiles. Thankfully, the increasing awareness of sustainable materials in the environment has turned many Australians into nature-conscious individuals. As a result, organic cotton is becoming a critically sought-after material for cushion covers, curtains, etc. Again, recycled polyester and low-impact linen are strongly taking the turf in the sustainable home décor fabrics in 2021.
For this reason, businesses such as Bandhini, Armadillo & Co., and Koskela have turned to sustainable resources in creating home décor products. Their eco-friendly designs range from naturally stuffed cushions to homewares, non-synthetic fabrics, etc.

Grandmillenial style

It’s interesting to note that many millennials are returning to ‘Grandma’s home comforts’, and that’s where this decor style picks its inspiration from. The floral curtains, old-school patterns, velvet sofa, etc., are nostalgic elements millennials are bringing back with this trend. According to an interior designer, Becky Boyle, you can describe the grandmillenial style simply as combining items such as slipcovers, chinoiserie, fringes and trims, drapery, and skirts on furniture and adapting them to suit the contemporary thirty-year old’s taste.

The grandmillennial style décor is proof of how cyclical trends can be, even though most are spruced up a bit to suit individual preferences. These styles aren’t all like what you may have seen in grandma’s house while growing up, but rather an infusion of traditional and contemporary. As Becky Boyle puts it, millennials infuse 21st-century elements that help eliminate tackiness and a mediocre style. As bold patterns have also made a comeback with this style, it’s not surprising to see classic prints such as polka dots, toile, chintz, floral, and leopard prints.

Earth toned décor

You can never go wrong with nature-based colours in your home décor because these tones have a natural dispensation to complement each other. For example, terracotta, brown, beige, and coffee-coloured tones are versatile and usually don’t need much detailing and planning to create harmony and a soothing effect in your living space. As proof of this growing trend, Houzz Australia reported that more people had reignited interests in different shades of brown.

It’s also widely believed that earth-toned colours are trending because they don’t discolour too quickly. Remember to strike a balance between creating an earth-tone theme and maintaining a vibrant atmosphere, as excessive use of earth tone themes may come across as dull.

Doors and Dividers

This creative style was largely brought about by the pandemic and the need to divide up space for multiple purposes in the home. As proof of this, Pinterest and Etsy, in December 2020, anticipated this trend. Etsy indicated that because many more people were working from home, there’s been heightened interest in the need to create separate zones. Therefore, Etsy recorded a 134% increase in room divider purchases among Australians.

These trends are quite easy to create only if you have the requisite information on setting them up. Otherwise, your best bet is to hire a professional to spice up your living quarters to suit your preference. With that said, keep in mind that trends come and go, while others are cyclical. Therefore, always stick to what appeals to you and, most importantly, what you can afford.
