Is there a way to add more space to your home without investing in a costly and disruptive extension? Well…there’s good and bad news! The bad news is that you can’t physically add more floor space to your home without actually building more rooms onto it. However, the good news is that there are methods of creating more space and making your home look and feel more spacious. It won’t physically increase in size, but you should feel less cramped and get more from your current floor space.

Here are some things you can do:

Build or buy a garden shed

If you have a garden, getting a shed is the perfect solution. It’s far easier to build than a garage, and you can pretty much handle it by yourself. Get in touch with timber merchants, buy all the equipment/supplies, then watch a YouTube video and you’re good to go! If you don’t like getting your hands dirty, you can always buy a pre-built one online. The purpose of this is to act as a storage space for things that aren’t needed in your home at all times. You’ll be amazed at how much space this creates when you remove lots of clutter or items that you use sporadically from your property. It may even let you clear out your attic, leaving it open for a little renovation – perhaps adding a new room to your home without an extension!

Use your furniture for storage purposes

Next, you can create space by turning your furniture into storage space. This works in a couple of ways. Firstly, you can buy furniture that has built-in storage compartments. This includes beds that lift up to reveal a large storage area, footrests where the top can be taken off and the rest is basically a box, etc. Secondly, you can take advantage of the fixed state of some furniture to store things underneath. Again, beds are a great example as you can put belongings under the bed in small storage containers. The same goes for sofas and armchairs – you’re basically hiding stuff under the furniture, so it’s not in plain sight. Therefore, the illusion of more space is created because fewer things are left cluttered about. Not only that but you genuinely do create more space for people to walk around and move.

Be more organised

Yes, the act of being more organised is the simplest way of creating space in your home. Think about all the different ways you can be a bit tidier or neater. For instance, putting your shoes away in a rack, rather than leaving them on the hallway floor. Instantly, more space is created and the hallway feels less cramped. In the living room, stop leaving things on the floor or letting coffee tables get cluttered. Even the process of reorganizing your furniture layout can add more space to your home.

So, yes, you can technically add more space to your home without paying for an extension. It won’t make your house bigger, but it will help you open up your property and take advantage of all the space you currently have.
