The Finishing Touches Every Family Home Needs

The Finishing Touches Every Family Home Needs

A few things to consider

Modern living is fast-paced, ultra-connected and always on, and our homes are adapting to our new way of life. Along with fashion and technology, the world of architecture and design is becoming influence by the new demands we place on our time. There are many aspects to this – from a trend towards more open-plan living to moving towards lighter spaces, to increasing ac installation to deal with warmer summers and even the clean lines of contemporary furniture design. If it’s time to bring a more modern look and improve your home, here’s where to begin…

Increase The Natural Light

Traditional, subdivided darker interiors with small windows have given way to everything light and airy when it comes to the design of our homes. If you have a chance to redo the floorplan, make sure you work it around sources of natural light, and consider adding Velux windows to open up the roof space as well. You can always opt for opaque glazing if you want to retain privacy but keep the natural light flowing.

Go Neutral With A Touch Of Drama

A lighter, brighter scheme needs neutral tones to really increase the sense of space, but lift these and add impact by choosing a beautiful, bright accent colour or two. A bold green or a petrol blue – even a bright magenta – all work fantastically well with neutral decor. You can also lift a neutral scheme using metallic accents which add interest or go for lots of different textures to achieve a calming yet sophisticated scheme.

Try Bare Floors

If you’ve always gone for fitted carpets in your home, ring the changes with a beautiful hard floor instead. Engineered wood floors, polished concrete or clean tiling look very chic but are also hard-wearing and practical, especially if you have kids. You can opt for underfloor heating if you want to keep your space warm. One seamless floor finish through an open plan space can look great, and you can add textured area rugs to seating areas to cosy them up.

Add Some Technology

The role of technology to help in running the home has exploded over the past few years, so if you’re planning an update then it’s wise to work a few tech updates in there. Wireless controls that connect to WiFi for electronics, appliances, heating systems, home security and lighting can all make life easier and can be integrated with voice control via a system such as Alexa. This approach can really bring the family home up to date and give you greater control over the household bills as well.

Use Natural Materials

The most beautiful contemporary home design makes great use of natural materials for a sleek finish. Elements such as natural woods, slate and stone finishes, quartz or granite worktops and leather furniture give a timeless refinement and are generally highly durable as well as looking amazing. Achieve a great look by mixing older pieces with very modern design for an effortless space that feels organic.

Bedroom inspiration

We are now getting closer to finally being able to give our bedroom the much-needed makeover that it is desperately needing. We are currently looking for bedroom inspiration. Since moving in our house back in November every other room has taken priority over our bedroom. We haven’t done much to our bedroom as yet apart from take off the horrid wallpaper, leaving ourselves with bare walls – walls that are an awful dark blue.

We have been searching the internet for inspiration. Our bedroom we have now is much smaller to what we previously had. We previously had fitted wardrobes and sadly no longer have space for this.

Planning ahead

Wardrobes

Playing about with our bedroom plans and having those all important discussions, we have been hunting about for over bed storage with a corner wardrobe – this will give us added storage by using the space above our bed and also by making full use of the bedside table space too!

something like this..

Lighting

We will be wanting lighting fitted in the underneath of the overbed storage. We will want these working via a switch or pull-cord that can be easily reached from bed. We will also be adding down lights to the ceiling that can work via a dimmer switch for mood lighting.

Drawer space

We hope to be able to fit a draw unit inside our wardrobes. By doing this we will save ourselves some floor space and this will also help to make our room feel that bit bigger. We also have draw space under our bed.

Bed

We recently purchased a new bed before moving house so our bed will just need to be looked after and treated to some new bedding to blend with our newly chosen colour scheme. One thing we didn’t do with our old bed and that was protect it with a mattress protector. We have been looking at mattress protectors from Yorkshire Linen

Whilst browsing their site this stunning Kylie Minogue set caught my eye, how stunning is this set. You can’t beat the feeling of sinking into bed that has soft and comfortable linen.

Added extras

Our TV will be mounted on the wall, we have chosen a blackout blind and curtains from Dunelm. As Ian works shifts he finds it hard to sleep during the daytime following a night shift due to the daylight. We went on the hunt for a blackout blind and found this Laura Natural blackout roller blind…..

There is nothing worse than broken sleep, especially if you have work the next day so getting your bedroom right to your ideal comfort is important. We plan to decorate our room a neutral colour and then add splashes of colour within our soft furnishings, such as a rug, cushions, bed spreads etc.

Our carpet will be a nice neutral colour that will work well with any colour that we plan to use in our bedroom.

Our plans are slowly coming together and we are so looking forward to finally having our style put into our bedroom.

Are you currently working on any home improvements?
